Return to Appliance Repair Charleston
I get the call at 8:30 in the morning, “Can you install a bearing in a commercial dryer today for us? We’re a Residence Inn in Columbia.”
The guy has an edge to his voice, he’s the maintenance tech for the facilities, they only have two dryers, huge Milnor commercial dryers. One of them has a drive motor that is going in and out and the staff is having to run it two or three times to get a load dry. (Three times the labor and utilities, OMG!)
The other dryer has been their workhorse but it just blew a bearing. They have an upscale motel full of people needing sheets, towels, etc. They are struggling to keep up and falling behind.
This is on a Wednesday morning. The machines are under warranty, but the techs from the company they purchased from won’t come out till Friday afternoon.
They want it now and I understand why completely.
I let them know I’m based in Charleston and have to charge for travel time.
No Problem.
I tell them that I only do COD, that I don’t do billing with companies I don’t have a track record with.
No Problem. Why haven’t you left yet?!
When I get there, I see the bearing seals are shot, two other techs have already looked at it and were afraid to touch it. This is a huge industrial machine and intimidating if you’ve never worked on one before.
However, my Father ran laundromats, so these were the types of machines I originally learned to service as a boy. I was helping with repairs and installs when I was 11 years old. I grab my tool bag and dive in. A few hours later their laundry facilities were back online, problem solved.
Apparently I’m their new “Dryer Guy” LOL.
They had me quote them a price on coming out quarterly to do preventative maintenance and inspections on their equipment.
They’re happy because they have one less thing to worry about, they know who to call when their laundry equipment goes out, I’m happy because they are.
So if you find yourself in similar circumstances and need immediate, emergency service, you may want to consider giving me a call.
