Are you tired of being tethered to the kitchen the whole time you’re preparing a meal? You may be interested in a new GE app and upgrade that will let you monitor your cooking while you’re out running errands.

Ge has launched four different models of Wi-Fi enabled ovens which give users the ability to control temperatures, set timers and monitor the status of the dishes being cooked via an app installed on your smart phone.

Up to now, you had to be within Wi-Fi range of your oven to be able to monitor it remotely, however a new app update will let users control the oven even when they aren’t in the house.

While this all sounds really exciting I have to tell you that as a service technician, it alarms me slightly to think of an appliance with the ability to start fires being operated without anyone around to monitor it. Yet in all fairness, I routinely pop stuff in the oven then go out and walk the dog or run short errands. So I guess if you can actually monitor the oven through your app, it’s probably a better practice than having to remember I can’t too long gabbing with the neighbors or my pizza is going to be burnt to a crisp.

This is GE’s first available upgrade to their existing line of wall ovens with the model numbers PT9050, PT9550, PK7000, PK7500.

A company spokesperson said. “Consumer convenience will always be a driving factor in GE’s new appliance designs, consumer’s use smartphones to manage their lives, so it only makes sense that the technologies would converge.”

The GE Brillion mobile app for both iOS and Android syncs with the oven models even automatically pushes updates to keep you up to date on what is going on inside your oven. It operates similarly to a remote control allowing the user to pre-heat the oven, adjust settings or turn it off if they wish.

GE’s remote-enabled wall ovens price range is between $2,299 – $3,799 and are available in black, white and stainless finishes. Similar updates are expected to roll out to other appliance categories such as refrigeration later on this year.
