The Bad Compressor Chain Reaction

Return to Appliance Repair Charleston

The poor guy is staring at me in dis-belief, not wanting to hear what I have to tell him. I run into this all too often and this time it is a common problem that I see a lot of, something minor has caused something major and now the smart move would be to replace the refrigerator and get a new one.

What lead up to this? Lint and pet hair in an area that is hard to get to and difficult to clean. On this particular model of Amana and lots of Whirlpool refrigerators, it is very important to keep the condenser coils underneath the fridge clean and free of debris.

These coils are part of an air current that has to circulate underneath the unit to take the heat out of the condenser coils, cool the compressor and evaporate the water which drains during defrost. When they are dirty, they cause the compressor to have to work longer to remove the heat. It also causes the compressor to run at a temperature that is higher than what it is designed for. Metal gets hot, it expands which causes more friction and more heat.

This can only go on so long before the compressor gets too hot and cuts off internally at it’s high limit switch, or it loses compression and even though it continues to run, all the metal parts inside are worn out and it can’t keep the proper level of internal pressure on the freon and the unit ceases to cool properly.

If you want to get the most out of your new refrigerator, schedule regular cleanings of your condenser coils and the areas underneath your refrigerator. This will go a long way in saving you head aches and money.
