“So…anyway, I’m starting to wonder if the guy we have trying to fix our machines really knows what he’s doing and I’d like to have you come take a look at them.”

St John’s Yacht Club in Charleston, SC

His name is Beau, he’s the dock-master at St Johns Yacht Club over on the Stono River, needless to say he’s got another set of headaches on his hands, aside from the other dozens of things that always need attending to in a marina.

Upon arrival, I discover two washers out and a dryer are out of order. These are some of Alliance Laundry Systems stack components. They feature a washer on the bottom and a dryer on the top. They have me double check the other guy’s diagnosis, he’s right about the two washers and completely clueless as to the problem with the dryer.

I’m told he’s already spent a lot of hours trying to figure out why the computer controls keep throwing random errors.

I ask them where the breaker box is at and if they have tried turning it on and off to get rid of any static electricity buildup in the computer and control boards.

The manager jumps up and runs upstairs and throws the breaker off. I let it set five minutes and have him throw it back on.

BAM!! Progress! The dryer comes back on and functions normally, it did indeed have too much static electricity building up in it. This is a common problem and I often find myself having to do this.

The outcome, they have the other guy finish up the repairs he’s already started since he’s already ordered the parts and they send all future repairs to me. I just repaired a washer for them last week.

I think the big sell for them is that they no longer have to wonder about who to call if they have an issue with their coin operated laundry equipment. Even better, they no longer have to worry about whether the person they call knows what he’s doing.

If you find yourself in similar circumstances, feel free to give me a call at 843 568 5936.

Emergency Milnor Dryer Repair Columbia

Return to Appliance Repair Charleston

I get the call at 8:30 in the morning, “Can you install a bearing in a commercial dryer today for us? We’re a Residence Inn in Columbia.”

Residence Inn Columbia

Residence Inn Columbia

The guy has an edge to his voice, he’s the maintenance tech for the facilities, they only have two dryers, huge Milnor commercial dryers. One of them has a drive motor that is going in and out and the staff is having to run it two or three times to get a load dry. (Three times the labor and utilities, OMG!)

The other dryer has been their workhorse but it just blew a bearing. They have an upscale motel full of people needing sheets, towels, etc. They are struggling to keep up and falling behind.

This is on a Wednesday morning. The machines are under warranty, but the techs from the company they purchased from won’t come out till Friday afternoon.

They want it now and I understand why completely.
I let them know I’m based in Charleston and have to charge for travel time.
No Problem.

I tell them that I only do COD, that I don’t do billing with companies I don’t have a track record with.
No Problem. Why haven’t you left yet?!

When I get there, I see the bearing seals are shot, two other techs have already looked at it and were afraid to touch it. This is a huge industrial machine and intimidating if you’ve never worked on one before.

However, my Father ran laundromats, so these were the types of machines I originally learned to service as a boy. I was helping with repairs and installs when I was 11 years old. I grab my tool bag and dive in. A few hours later their laundry facilities were back online, problem solved.

Apparently I’m their new “Dryer Guy” LOL.
They had me quote them a price on coming out quarterly to do preventative maintenance and inspections on their equipment.

They’re happy because they have one less thing to worry about, they know who to call when their laundry equipment goes out, I’m happy because they are.

So if you find yourself in similar circumstances and need immediate, emergency service, you may want to consider giving me a call.

GE HD M# GLDS560ED0WW Won’t Start

Return to Appliance Repair Charleston

I got to run a call in the Old Village section of Mount Pleasant today, always a pleasure to run around down there. Was called out to one of the old houses that had a GE HD Dryer Model #GLDS560ED0WW that wouldn’t start even though the control board was coming on. The owner of the home, which is sublet as apartments, said he was afraid the tenants had been overloading the machines. He said he’d heard one of them running the other day and it had sounded like someone was trying to dry a bowling ball.

Which is why I was not surprised to find the belt was broken on the dryer when I got it apart. The owner had been wondering why the motor wasn’t coming on, you see on older models, the motor would still come on even if the belt was broken. However, on newer models there is a switch on the arm which keeps tension on the belt, which monitors whether or not your belt is intact and in the proper place or not. If not, it won’t allow the motor or the heating coil to start up.

This is one of the new generation of safety features you see being implemented on a lot of machines and is really a good thing. In any case, the new tension device on this particular device can be a bear to get the belt on, unlike the older models which you can normally get in place fairly easily.

If you have this problem and need it repaired, give us a call, we can get it squared away for you in no time at all. 843 568 5936

The Bad Compressor Chain Reaction

Return to Appliance Repair Charleston

The poor guy is staring at me in dis-belief, not wanting to hear what I have to tell him. I run into this all too often and this time it is a common problem that I see a lot of, something minor has caused something major and now the smart move would be to replace the refrigerator and get a new one.

What lead up to this? Lint and pet hair in an area that is hard to get to and difficult to clean. On this particular model of Amana and lots of Whirlpool refrigerators, it is very important to keep the condenser coils underneath the fridge clean and free of debris.

These coils are part of an air current that has to circulate underneath the unit to take the heat out of the condenser coils, cool the compressor and evaporate the water which drains during defrost. When they are dirty, they cause the compressor to have to work longer to remove the heat. It also causes the compressor to run at a temperature that is higher than what it is designed for. Metal gets hot, it expands which causes more friction and more heat.

This can only go on so long before the compressor gets too hot and cuts off internally at it’s high limit switch, or it loses compression and even though it continues to run, all the metal parts inside are worn out and it can’t keep the proper level of internal pressure on the freon and the unit ceases to cool properly.

If you want to get the most out of your new refrigerator, schedule regular cleanings of your condenser coils and the areas underneath your refrigerator. This will go a long way in saving you head aches and money.

Control Your Oven With An App

Return to Appliance Repair Charleston

Oven Control App Screenshot

GE Brillion Mobile App

Are you tired of being tethered to the kitchen the whole time you’re preparing a meal? You may be interested in a new GE app and upgrade that will let you monitor your cooking while you’re out running errands.

Ge has launched four different models of Wi-Fi enabled ovens which give users the ability to control temperatures, set timers and monitor the status of the dishes being cooked via an app installed on your smart phone.

Up to now, you had to be within Wi-Fi range of your oven to be able to monitor it remotely, however a new app update will let users control the oven even when they aren’t in the house.

While this all sounds really exciting I have to tell you that as a service technician, it alarms me slightly to think of an appliance with the ability to start fires being operated without anyone around to monitor it. Yet in all fairness, I routinely pop stuff in the oven then go out and walk the dog or run short errands. So I guess if you can actually monitor the oven through your app, it’s probably a better practice than having to remember I can’t too long gabbing with the neighbors or my pizza is going to be burnt to a crisp.

This is GE’s first available upgrade to their existing line of wall ovens with the model numbers PT9050, PT9550, PK7000, PK7500.

A company spokesperson said. “Consumer convenience will always be a driving factor in GE’s new appliance designs, consumer’s use smartphones to manage their lives, so it only makes sense that the technologies would converge.”

The GE Brillion mobile app for both iOS and Android syncs with the oven models even automatically pushes updates to keep you up to date on what is going on inside your oven. It operates similarly to a remote control allowing the user to pre-heat the oven, adjust settings or turn it off if they wish.

GE’s remote-enabled wall ovens price range is between $2,299 – $3,799 and are available in black, white and stainless finishes. Similar updates are expected to roll out to other appliance categories such as refrigeration later on this year.

Dishwasher Making Noise

Return to Appliance Repair Charleston

Dishwasher Making Noise – One thing it is always wise to do is to turn your appliance off if you hear it making a strange noise, I just arrived at a call for a dishwasher that I’m told is making a lot of noise when it runs. When I originally got the call, the lady of the house had told me that she just let it run through the cycle even though it was making a noise like  a freight train.

Once I arrived and got the impeller area opened up, I immediately saw that their was some broken glass in the compartment, needless to say it was grinding away inside the impeller compartment all the way thorough the cycle that was being run. After removing what could be seen by taking off the top cover of the assembly, I was ready to run a test and see if there was anything else in the water drive unit.

Unfortunately, the test revealed that the unit was still not quite right. The glass had been ground up and had eaten up the impeller and the housing and the only solution would be to disconnect the power, water and drain lines, completely pull the unit out and dis-assemble it to survey which parts had been damaged and would need to be replaced.

However, due to the age of the dishwasher and the fact that a new one could be purchased for just over three hundred bucks, they decided to go ahead and just replace it.

The sad part was that it had been working just fine until this problem happened and more than likely would have continued to work for years to come. Lesson learned, when you hear dishwasher making noise, turn it off immediately and call an appliance repair tech, you’ll probably end up saving yourself some money if you do.

Washing Machine Noise – Don’t let it fool you.

Return to Appliance Repair Charleston

Most of the time when your washer is making a noise that sounds like a freight train going ninety miles an hour you more than likely have a bearing issue, but not always. Sometimes it can just be a simple problem.

Last week I ran a call for a Maytag washer that was making a loud noise and the homeowners were almost sure the bearing was blown and had in fact already started looking for a replacement washer. However they had just had twins, so needless to say they weren’t looking to spend another sizable chunk of change to replace their washer, and they were frantic to get a working washer on premises.

Luckily this was one of those cases where the washing machine noise didn’t signal the end of the machine. All that had happened was that the bolt which held the main pulley in place had not been tightened properly when it was first assembled and had worked loose allowing the pulley to slip down and grind against the plastic protection cover. Luckily they had cut it off when they first heard the noise ( always a wise policy ) and so the parts had not been too badly damaged, I was able to put it all back together, tighten the bolt securely and get everything back to normal in about 45 minutes.

So we were able to get their home laundry back in business at a reasonable cost. Needless to say, they were happy!

The reason people jump to the conclusion when they hear their washer making noise is that this in most cases means that your tub bearings are going or are already gone. Usually when a washer reaches that point, it is a better investment to go ahead and purchase a new washer than to attempt replacing the bearings. A smart rule of thumb is that if it is going to be 50% of the cost of a new appliance to repair an old one, you’re probably better off going ahead and getting a new one.

However, it may be worth paying a tech the service charge to come out and verify that you do have a bearing problem, at least it was in this case.

Ice Cubes Taste Bad?

Return to Appliance Repair Charleston

Have you noticed that refrigerator’s ice maker is making ice cubes that taste bad or smell funny, this is a fairly common problem in ice makers.

The first possible cause for ice that isn’t quite right is a dirty water filtration system filter. If your filter is older than six months you should go ahead and replace it since that is about as long as they are designed to work properly. In fact, if your family uses a lot of ice you may need to replace the filter at more frequent intervals, because the more water the filter has to purify the less time it lasts.

A second possible cause for bad tasting ice is that you have stale ice cubes in your ice bin. It is easy for food gases and odors to be transferred to water and ice, especially from food that is old and spoiled. To prevent this, keep a close watch on the items in your refrigerator and also empty your ice bin of old ice at regularly and clean the bin. This will help in keeping your ice clean and preserving the taste.

A third cause is often a more difficult issue to treat and may have more of a negative impact on your health, and this is that your ice tastes bad due to an unhealthy water supply. In many cases city or well water can be loaded down with impurities of all types. Minerals, salt and sulfur will cause ice cubes to have an unpleasant taste and odor. If you have more serious water problems, you may want to consider getting a master water filtration system that treats all the water coming into your household. Also if your refrigerator didn’t come with a water filtration kit consider purchasing an add on filtration kit. These add on units are not expensive and can be purchased online or at your local appliance repair parts store.

A fourth cause of bad tasting ice is that hard water is affecting the water quality. The solution to this is to add a water softening system to your home. Hard water may also be affecting the water quality. You can test for water hardness with water test strips, you may also need a water softening system. If you already have one in place, it may be using too much salt. Consult your water softening system owner’s manual and adjust settings as needed.

Finally, food spills or mildew growing inside the freezer or refrigerator. Often times a refrigerator will have so many items in it that it becomes difficult to notice spills, so you should have a regular schedule set up to remove all food and clean the interior compartments. It is not advisable to use harsh chemicals such as bleach or ammonia as they may damage your unit’s interior walls and residual odors may leech into your foods. I suggest a solution of one tablespoon baking soda to one quart of water. In addition you may want to check your refrigerator’s owners manual for specific cleaning instructions.

Following these tips will in most cases give you the best tasting and purest ice.

Don’t Void Your Warranty

The following is another scenario that I run into a lot in the course of running an appliance repair service. In most cases it will involve a customer who has just lost a huge amount of time and money. A lot of the time they have also voided the warranty on their appliance in the process. All of these are caused by the client trying to repair the issue with their home appliance on their own.

Now don’t get me wrong, sometimes this can be a good idea if the problem is only a minor one and your appliance is currently not under warranty. A lot of the time all you need is five minutes on youTube and some basic tools and you can take care of minor problems. However, you should keep in mind that most factory warranties are voided if you attempt to repair your appliance yourself instead of calling an authorized service representative. So if your do have a current warranty your best bet is probably to let an authorized tech take care of whatever problems you are experiencing.

If you don’t have a warranty, you may be able to save some money by doing minor repairs yourself. On the other hand, you may also waste a good deal of time and money, something you may want to consider. Let me give you a few examples of these kinds of cases I’ve run into lately.

Not long ago, I ran into an individual who had voided the warranty on his range because he had attempted to fix a bad heating filament himself. He had pulled the range out and taken the back off before deciding to call the dealer who sold it to him. When the technician came out and observed that the appliance had been dis-assembled, he informed the owner that the warranty was void. In addition, he flatly refused to work on the range because the home owner had already taken it apart, something a lot of appliance repair companies do.

Another example, last month I was called out to an expansive mansion on a local river. The owner was a local contractor, obviously a very wealthy individual and one who was accustomed to working on things on his own. His refrigerator’s ice maker had recently gone on the blink and he had attempted to repair it himself. He had gone on YouTube, found out some of the most common causes, gone down to the local parts store and purchased a part he didn’t need.

All together, he told me he’d spent about 4 hours of his weekend trying to fix the ice maker. He was not happy when I inquired what his time was worth by the hour, he said he normally billed out at about 95.00 per hour. So including the part, his attempt at repair had cost him around 450.00, and then he still had to pay me to perform the repair on the correct part and get his ice maker running.

Yesterday, I visited a young married couple whose mother had given them her old refrigerator, which had worked well for years except for one lower corner of the door seal which didn’t close quite properly. The young man had ordered a new door seal which is usually about a hundred bucks and attempted to replace it. However, he had bent the door in several critical areas as he performed the replacement and when he had it back together, the door wouldn’t seal at all and the refrigerator was shot.

Sadly there was nothing we could do to help him, you can order a replacement door seal but you can’t order a new door. In addition, they had to pay us a service charge for coming out to look at and diagnose the refrigerator; a bad day all around.

While there are repairs you can easily take care of, replacing a busted water hose on your washer for example, many of the more complex repairs may be better off in the hands of a qualified technician. If you need someone to take a look at your broken appliance give us a call today at 843 568 5936
